Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

Philosophy

Ronan has said, “…Erwan and I both like the idea of giving someone an object and letting them decide how they’ll use it.” This focus on the user of their products results in designs that are changeable, so that everyone can experience their creations differently. Working as collaborators, Ronan and Erwan combine controlled chaos with intense energy. They both contribute to every project, which means that every element is analyzed more rigorously. As brothers, they are able to argue with each other and yet still work as a team. They produce their strongest work when they disagree because they push each other to go further. Ronan and Erwan’s dedication to innovation has led to a combination of industrial and experimental projects that bring feeling back to the relationship between man and the material world. The brothers only complete about 10 projects per year because their working method requires time to explore tangents which may end with having to start over with a new approach. Their design influences include Jasper Morrison, Ettore Sottsass, and Andrea Branzi.
